What need-based and non-need based federal financial aid is available to students?
There are several types of need based and non-need based federal financial aid available to students. For example:
Federal Pell Grants: The Federal Pell Grant is available to undergraduate students who have not earned a bachelor’s or professional degree. Unlike a loan, the Pell Grant does not have to be repaid. To determine if a student is eligible financially, the U.S. Department of Education uses a standard formula, established by Congress, to evaluate information reported on the FAFSA.
Students and others can go to www.federalstudentaid.ed.gov to learn more about these new student aid grant programs.
Federal Stafford Loan Programs: Stafford loans are low-interest government subsidized loans to assist students who are enrolled at least half time. Under the Direct Loan program, the Federal government now insures these loans. There are four types of Stafford loans:
- Subsidized loans-a student must have financial need. Students will not be charged any interest before the repayment period begins or during authorized periods of deferments.
- Unsubsidized loans-are not awarded on the basis of need. Students will be charged interest from the time the loan is disbursed until it is paid in full. Students will have the option of paying the interest while in school or allowing it to accrue.
- Parent PLUS loans-enable parents, or a parent, with good credit histories to borrow money in order to pay the education expenses of each child in the family classified as a dependent undergraduate student enrolled at Aerosim at least half time.
What need-based and non-need based state and local aid programs, school aid programs, and other private aid programs are available to students?
Veterans Educational Benefits: Aerosim Flight Academy is approved by the Florida Department of Veteran’s Affairs State Approving Agency so that eligible persons can receive their VA education benefits while in attendance with the academy. Students interested in veterans educational benefits should contact the Financial Aid Department. Veterans who are unsure of their eligibility or have questions about their entitlement should contact the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Eligible students must maintain satisfactory academic progress in the program in which they enroll to continue receiving VA education benefits.
How do students apply for aid?
To apply for Title IV aid, a student must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The application must be completed with extreme care and accuracy. The application will be transmitted electronically to a central processor, which will calculate the Expected Family Contribution (EFC) according to the Federal Needs Analysis and run the information through various edits. Aerosim’s Financial Aid Department is available to answer any questions students may have about the FAFSA. The FAFSA is used to determine eligibility for all types of Title IV programs. The funds available to the student will depend on the EFC and the cost of attendance.
How is eligibility for aid determined?
To be eligible for Title IV Assistance, a student must meet the following requirements:
- Be enrolled as a regular student in an eligible program of study.
- Be a United States citizen or national or an eligible non-citizen. Verification of eligible non-citizen status may be required.
- Have financial need as determined by a needs analysis system approved by the U.S. Department of Education.
- Provide required documentation for the verification process and determination of dependency status when required.
- Not owe a refund on a Federal Pell Grant, FSEOG, or State Grant previously received from any college.
- Not be in default on a Federal Perkins Loan (formerly NDSL), Federal PLUS, Federal SLS, Federal Stafford Loans, or any Income Contingent Loan previously received from any college or university.
- Not have borrowed in excess of annual aggregate limits for the Title IV programs.
- Be registered for the Selective Service if the student is a male born after December 31, 1959.
The availability of, and eligibility for, aid from federal programs is not guaranteed from one year to the next. Students must reapply every year. When transferring to a different school, students must check with their new school to find out the appropriate steps to take. Once the application is completed, the information will be used in formulas that calculate need and help determine eligibility. Financial need is determined by subtracting the EFC from the cost of attendance. When combined with other aid resources, a student’s aid package may not exceed the cost of education.
What are the rights and responsibilities of students receiving aid?
A Federal Stafford Loan borrower can find their Borrower’s Rights and Responsibilities in the Master Promissory Note. A Signed copy of your MPN can be obtained from your lender that you applied with.
- The Federal Stafford Loan Program includes the following loans:
- Subsidized Federal Stafford Loan formerly known as Guaranteed Student Loan (GSL),
- Unsubsidized Federal Stafford Loan,
- Federal PLUS (parent) Loan,
The Federal Stafford Loan Program is authorized by Title IV; Part B of the Higher Education Act of 1965, as amended.
How and when will financial aid be disbursed?
Federal Pell Grants: Pell Grant awards first half of the disbursement will be in the first term, and the second half will be at midpoint depending on hours earned. Aerosim will electronically credit the student’s account for the awarded amount when Aerosim receives the Pell that has been awarded, as long as we have received proof of high school graduation, or its equivalent, a valid ISIR, verification of student authorization form, and the student’s Pell eligibility has been clearly defined. A Student enrollment status determines the eligibility for Pell Grant.
Federal and Private Loans: Loan disbursements will be made at the beginning of the first term. In the case of a first time borrower, the first Federal loan disbursement will be delayed 30 days. Aerosim Academy Student Accounts Department will electronically credit the student’s account for the awarded amount each term that the loan money has been awarded, as long as we have received proof of high school graduation, or its equivalent, a valid ISIR, verification of a signed promissory note, verification of entrance counseling, verification of student authorization form, and student’s eligibility has been clearly met. Students must be at least half-time status for the term to receive a loan disbursement.
*No Federal Financial Aid funds will be disbursed to a student’s account until a valid proof of high school graduation or its equivalent (for undergraduate programs) is received and reviewed by the Student Records Department. Students may be financially responsible for all associated costs of attending the academy.
What are the terms and conditions of any employment that is part of the financial aid package?
Aerosim Flight Academy does not participate in the Federal Work Study Program.
What are the terms of, schedules for, and the necessity of loan repayment and required loan exit counseling?

What is the treatment of Title IV Aid when a student withdraws from school?
Please see the School Catalog
What are the criteria for measuring satisfactory academic progress?
All students must maintain satisfactory academic progress in order to remain enrolled at the school. Additionally, satisfactory academic progress must be maintained in order to remain eligible to continue receiving federal financial assistance. Satisfactory academic progress is determined by measuring the student’s cumulative grade point average (CGPA) and the student’s rate of progress toward completion of the academic program. For minimum requirements, please see Satisfactory Academic Progress within the online School Catalog.
How does a student who has failed to maintain satisfactory progress reestablish eligibility?
All students who did not meet the Academy’s satisfactory academic progress requirements must follow the prescribed appeal process outlined in the online catalog. For more information on the process to reestablishing eligibility, Please see Satisfactory Academic Progress within the online School Catalog.
Is there information available on preventing drug and alcohol abuse?
Two federal laws, the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988 (P.L. 101-690) and the Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act (P.L. 101-226), require institutions receiving federal financial assistance to provide a drug-free workplace, and to have a drug-free awareness program and a drug and alcohol abuse prevention program for students and employees. As a matter of policy, Aerosim prohibits the manufacture and unlawful possession, use, sale, or distribution of illicit drugs and alcohol by students and employees on its property and at any school activity. Further information on the school’s policies can be found in the School Catalog.
What are the terms and conditions under which students receiving federal education loans may obtain deferments while serving (a) Peace Corps; (b) under the Domestic Volunteer Service Act; and (c) a volunteer for a tax-exempt organization of demonstrated effectiveness in the field of community service?
As outlined in the Federal Master Promissory Note: If the student is unable to make my scheduled loan payments, the lender may allow them to reduce their payment amount, to extend the time for making payments, or to temporarily stop making payments as long as they intend to repay my loan. Allowing the student to temporarily delay or reduce loan payments is called forbearance. Interest charges continue to accrue during a forbearance period.
The lender may grant the student forbearance in the following circumstances:
- Financial hardship, and/or
- Illness
- The lender is generally not required to grant forbearance and may require the student to provide their reasons for the request and other information. The lender may grant a forbearance to eliminate a delinquency that persists even though the student is making scheduled installment payments. The lender may grant an administrative forbearance for up to 60 days in order to collect and process documentation supporting my request for a deferment, forbearance, change in repayment plan, or consolidation.
Circumstances that require the lender to grant a forbearance include:
- Serving in a medical or dental internship or residency program if certain criteria are met..
- Serving in a national service position for which the student receives a national service education award under the National and Community Service Trust Act of 1993. In some cases, the interest that accrues on a qualified loan during the service period will be paid by the Corporation for National and Community Service.
- Qualifying for partial repayment of the student’s loans under the Student Loan Repayment Program, as administered by the Department of Defense.
- Having a monthly debt burden for Title IV loans that collectively equals or exceeds 20% of the student’s total monthly gross income (for up to three years). Upon request, the lender will provide the student with forbearance information and a forbearance request form.

What are the requirements for the return of Title IV funds when a student withdraws from school?
A recipient of federal Title IV financial aid who withdraws from school during a payment period or period of enrollment in which the student began attendance will have the amount of Title IV funds he/she did not earn calculated according to federal regulations. This calculation will be based on the student’s last date of attendance (see Withdrawal from the Academy). The period of time in which Title IV financial aid is earned for a payment period or period of enrollment is the number of calendar days the student has been enrolled for the payment period or period of enrollment up to the day the student withdrew, divided by the total calendar days in the payment period or period of enrollment. The percentage is multiplied by the amount of Title IV financial aid for the payment period or period of enrollment for which the Title IV financial aid was awarded to determine the amount of Title IV financial aid earned. The amount of Title IV financial aid that has not been earned for the payment period or period of enrollment, and must be returned, is the complement of the amount earned.
The amount of Title IV financial aid earned and the amount of Title IV financial aid not earned will be calculated based on the amount of Title IV financial aid that was disbursed for the payment period or period of enrollment upon which the calculation was based. A student will have earned 100% of the Title IV financial aid disbursed for the payment period or period of enrollment if the student withdrew after completing more than 60% of the payment period or period of enrollment. Once the amount of Title IV financial aid that was not earned has been calculated, federal regulations require that the school return Title IV funds disbursed for the payment period or period of enrollment and used for institutional costs in the following order:
- Unsubsidized Federal Stafford Loans
- Subsidized Federal Stafford Loans
- Unsubsidized Direct Stafford Loans (other than PLUS loans)
- Subsidized Direct Stafford Loans
- Federal PLUS/Grad PLUS Loans
- Direct PLUS Loans
- Federal Pell Grants
If the amount of unearned Title IV financial aid disbursed exceeds the amount that is returned by the school, the student (or parent, if a Federal PLUS Loan) must return or repay, as appropriate, the remaining amount that must be returned or repaid, as appropriate.
What is the refund policy with which the student must comply?
In the event a student terminates the course of instruction for any reason, the student shall comply with the following refund policy. To ensure a rapid refund of paid tuition to the student by the Academy, students shall notify the Academy in writing of intent to withdraw from the course of instruction. All monies paid by an applicant excluding the estimated fingerprinting fee (as required by Homeland Security for non-citizen trainees) of $100.00 and registration fee of $150.00 shall be refunded if requested within 3 days after the start date. All students will be charged for any training actually received at the current published rates, plus registration and fingerprinting fees; remaining unused monies will be returned.
Tuition for ground school is charged at normal, school published customary rates per clock hour of instruction. If a student withdraws with a last date of actual attendance occurring more than 3 days after the start date of class, the tuition amount retained by the Academy will be based on the length of time the student remained enrolled in the class, up to a maximum of 40% of the scheduled class hours. If a student’s last date of actual attendance occurs after 40% of the scheduled classes have occurred, there will be no tuition refund for such class. The termination date for refund computation of ground school classes is the last day of actual attendance by the student. Refunds shall be made within 30 days of the date that the Academy is made aware by the student that the student has withdrawn.
For more information on the Refund Policy please refer to the School Catalog.
What are the requirements for officially withdrawing from the school?
The withdrawal date used to determine when the student is no longer enrolled at the Academy is the last date of attendance (LDA) and is used as the official date of withdrawal if the student is administratively withdrawn. In all cases, the LDA is used as the official withdrawal date for refund calculations. Aerosim students intending to withdraw from the Academy must submit a formal notice to the Registrar Department. Any outstanding tuition or fee charges owed must be paid at the time of withdrawal.
